Fear as US shuts down air traffic control towers
After the announcement that small knives will be allowed on US planes as of April 25, allegedly due to federal budget cuts, the US government has announced it will be shutting down nearly 240 air traffic control towers across the country.
The closures have also been blamed on federal budget cuts that went into effect this month, in which the Federal Aviation Administration has been forced to slash US $637 million for the rest of the fiscal year.
Airport directors and pilots have expressed concern over the impact the closures will have on takeoffs and landings at the affected airports, stressing that eliminating an extra pair of eyes on the ground could lead to more mid-air collisions and runway mix-ups.
Pilots are trained to land without help from air traffic control by communicating amongst themselves using common radio frequency, but without input from the traffic control tower, the margin for error will increase.
The towers that are set to close are at smaller airports with lighter air traffic.
Some mayors have now expressed concern that these air tower closures could impact tourism, as passengers will not want to risk flying through the affected airports.
