Mexican president calls for country name change
Mexico President Felipe Calderon has presented congress with a bill asking to officially change the name of his country.
In 1824, to celebrate the country’s independence from Spain, the name Estados Unidos Mexicanos, or the United Mexican States was adopted to emulate its northern neighbour, the United States of America.
However, President Calderon has now asked for the name to be changed officially to Mexico.
In a news statement he said, "The name of our country no longer needs to emulate that of other nations.”
President Calderon is due to end his term in December, making this one of the last bills he puts before the congress.
Calderon first began his campaign to change the name of the country in 2003, but it didn't make the vote.
Should the name-change make it through congress this time, bank notes and all official documentation will need to be changed to reflect the new name.
The president hopes that the name change will help restore pride among Mexico's citizens, in a country that has been plagued with gang related violence in recent years.
