Emirates plane suffers mid-air explosion
An Emirates Airline plane bound for Dubai from Sydney was forced to turn back after one of its engines exploded last night.
The A380 left Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport when one of its engines failed, resulting in a mid-air explosion 20 minutes after takeoff. The pilot was forced to turn back into Sydney airport to make an emergency landing. There have been no reports of injury.
According to Dubai’s 7days newspaper, passengers described seeing flashes of light from the engine followed by a loud bang.
Passenger John Fothergill of Auckland told News Limited,
"I thought it could have been lightning but then we saw flames come out of the engine. The whole interior of the A380 lit up.
"You'd have to say there were two- or three-metre flames. (The) explosion shook the plane."
Dubai-based Emirates Airline is reported to have released a statement confirming the incident, and that all passengers have been rebooked on alternative flights.
