Severed human heads found in Chicago airport

A  shipment containing 18 severed human heads was intercepted at Chicago O’Hare International Airport prior to Christmas and remained there until this week, as authorities carried out an investigation.

Three iceboxes containing the severed heads were shipped from a research facility in Rome on a Lufthasna Airlines flight, and were intercepted in Chicago because the destination of the package was not marked clearly.

When authorities made the gruesome discovery, the heads were sent to the Cook County Medical Examiners to rule out any chance of foul play.

Mary Paleologos, a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office, confirmed that the heads were initially shipped from the United States to Rome for medical research, and were then shipped back to America to be cremated

She told the Chicago Sun-Times that the heads have now been claimed by a Schiller Park crematorium.

Brian Bell, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said the discovery is not as uncommon as people might think. He told CBS Chicago, “Everybody here is, ‘Oh my gosh, you got a box of heads’ and everybody thinks it’s unheard of.”
“There’s no issue with the transportation of body parts for medical purposes,” he added.
